Jude Bellingham Has to Cut Out the Petulance to Reclaim a Star Position With Manager Thomas Tuchel.

For Bellingham to hopes to fight his way into England’s strongest squad, the smart move to cut out the nonsense. The way he reacted after noticing that his number was going up after an evening of uneven play in Tirana was not good enough.

"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stand by my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the players who substitute on," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you need to comply as a player."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Harry Kane had just put the Three Lions two goals ahead in a dead rubber match, the game had six minutes to go and Bellingham, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for bringing down the Albanian striker. It was not a questionable change. Indeed it might have been reckless for the head coach to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that there was a risk Bellingham would be suspended of the opening game of the competition by receiving a another booking.

Turning the Spotlight on Himself

But Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the player's annoyance as he realized that he would be substituted for another player. He threw his arms up and even though he exchanged a handshake while heading to the sideline there was no doubt that the manager did not appreciate it.

This is the challenge for Bellingham. He congratulated Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Harry Kane to score his second goal, but the rest was harmful to his cause. It's not like arguing was going to reverse the substitution. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the importance of behaving correctly.

Under Scrutiny

He, left out of the team last month, is being watched carefully since coming back to the fold in the current camp. Essentially he was being assessed and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to his substitution as the national team wrapped up a flawless qualification run by defeating a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.

Tactics and Formation

As a result the jury is out on if the team perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was open to interpretation. There was experimentation by the coach early on. He has provided the squad structure and clarity in recent months, employing a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed in this match. The young defender was given his first cap, Wharton made his first start internationally and the use of John Stones as a part-time midfielder created a passing resemblance to the Manchester club's historic treble-winning side.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He made a chance for Eberechi Eze after the break but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. He made many hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player at the beginning. England's play was messy after halftime. An opportunity for Albania followed Bellingham gave the ball away. His caution came after an opponent took the ball from Broja and brought down the attacker.

Substitutes Decide

Finally England’s depth was decisive. The coach brought on Phil Foden, who looked better suited to the position occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka delivered a corner kick for Harry Kane to open the scoring. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.

Connection Remains

Nevertheless, all talk was about Bellingham. The brilliance of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was a little lost in the ridiculousness of the Rogers substitution. When the match concluded, the focus was on Bellingham. Tuchel walked up to his side and directed the player to acknowledge the English fans. Their relationship is not broken. Tuchel is not willing to discard him at this stage. But if Tuchel is inclined to grant him the central position is not guaranteed.
