The Test: Changing Gender Identity to achieve Increased Reach

Dozens of female professionals joined an organized professional network test recently following popular discussions indicated that changing their gender to "male" enhanced their network presence.

Other testers modified their professional summaries to include what they termed "bro-coded" terminology - inserting results-driven business buzzwords like "propel", "transform" and "accelerate". Anecdotally, their exposure also improved.

Algorithmic Bias Questions Raised

The engagement increase has caused some to wonder whether a built-in gender bias in the platform's system prioritizes male users who employ online business jargon.

Like many large networking sites, LinkedIn utilizes an algorithm to decide which posts are shown to which members - boosting some while reducing others.

Company Statement

In a recent blog post, LinkedIn recognized the phenomenon but stated it does not consider "personal characteristics" when determining content distribution. Rather, the company explained that "hundreds of signals" affect how content are received.

Modifying profile gender in your settings does not affect how your content appears in search or feed.

Individual Results

Simone Bonnett, who changed her gender identifiers to "he/him" and her profile name to "Simon E", reported extraordinary outcomes.

"The numbers I'm observing indicate a 1,600% increase in profile views and a 1,300% increase in impressions," she noted.

Megan Cornish, a communications strategist, began experimenting after noticing her audience decrease substantially.

The Process

• Initially, she changed her profile gender to "male"
• Then, she used AI tools to rewrite her profile using "masculine-oriented" language
• Finally, she repurposed old posts with similar "assertive" style

The result was instantaneous: a more than fourfold rise in visibility within seven days.

The Downside

Although the positive results, Cornish expressed dissatisfaction with the method.

"Previously, my posts were more personal - concise and clever, but also warm and human," she explained. "Now, the bro-coded version was assertive and confident - similar to a white male being overly confident."

She abandoned the test after one week, saying "Each day I persisted, and results improved, I became angrier."

Mixed Results

Some testers encountered favorable outcomes. Cass Cooper who modified both her profile gender to "man" and her race to "white" reported a reduction in visibility and interaction.

"We know there's algorithmic bias, but it's extremely difficult to comprehend how it operates in particular situations or why," she remarked.

Wider Consequences

These tests occur alongside ongoing discussions about LinkedIn's distinctive position as both a business platform and community site.

Recent changes in recent months have reportedly resulted in female creators experiencing markedly lower visibility, resulting in informal experiments where identical content by male and female users received vastly different reach.

Technical Explanation

Per LinkedIn, the network uses AI systems to categorize and distribute content based on multiple factors, including post content and the user's professional identity.

The company claims it regularly evaluates its algorithms, including "examinations of gender-related disparities."

Company representative suggested that recent declines in certain members' visibility might originate from increased competition due to more content on the platform.

As one participant noted, "bro-coding" appears to be growing on the platform.

"People often view LinkedIn as more businesslike and refined," she remarked. "This is evolving. It's turning into increasingly competitive and unpredictable."
