A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates locations domestically and overseas.

"The year's tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the traditional January sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this businessman is renowned for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous record purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
• He bid 155 million yen the following year.
• In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.
