Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend after the team's ten-game winless start to the Premier League season.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have previous links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the process of appointing a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
