Suspected Harasser Questioned: 'But Suppose I Might Be Madeleine?'
A female indicted with harassing Kate McCann apparently recorded her a phone message which questioned: "suppose I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who a jury heard has repeatedly declared she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial indicted with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, the tribunal learned phone records and evidence obtained from phones documented Ms Wandelt repeatedly demanding Madeleine's mother for a genetic test over that period.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most widely reported child disappearance cases and is still unsolved.
'I Do Not Need Money'
One voicemail, shared in court, documented Ms Wandelt saying: "I know I'm heavy and plain like Madeleine had been, but I believe what I feel."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's voicemail expressed: "Imagine there is a small chance that I'm her? What then? Is that not significant for you?"
"I do not need money, I possess a living here in Poland, I only wish to discover," the recording stated.
The tribunal was told that by means of electronic messages, SMS messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a resemblance to Mrs McCann's vanished daughter, and claimed to have "memories" from a childhood with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, a data specialist with the police force who gathered the information, told the court there "didn't appear to be any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore contacted family friends of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On October 9th, 2024, the father responded to a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "a wrong number."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a recording on Mrs McCann's voicemail stating "I won't give up and I plan to establish my claim."
The court learned the co-defendant developed a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt before accompanying her on a appearance to the McCanns' home in the county in December 2024.
Call logs showed Mrs Spragg had communicated through messaging service to Mrs McCann to state the press had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the time before the trip to Rothley, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court learned message exchanges between the two defendants, in November 2024, planning trying to get Mrs McCann's genetic material from her bins or from silverware at a dining venue.
"We must take action," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the visit to their house, Mrs Spragg sent a text which stated: "We're currently sitting outside the McCanns' house with our vehicle dark similar to detectives. I desired to accomplish this with Peter Andrew I never thought I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The trial ongoing.
