The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
