The Tragic Shift a Single Year Has Caused in America

In late October 2024, the environment was entirely distinct. Prior to the national election, considerate Americans could recognize the country's significant faults – its injustices and inequality – but they continued to see it as America. A free society. A land where legal governance meant something. A nation led by a dignified and ethical public servant, despite his older age and declining health.

Nowadays, this autumn, many of us barely recognize the land we reside in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are detained and forced into transport, at times blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for an obscene ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his adversaries or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are deployed into American cities on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, renamed the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny during its expenditure of potentially totaling nearly $1tn of taxpayer money. Universities, law firms, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.

“America, just months before its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the brink into authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” a noted author, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we have become, and the speed at which it has happened.

Yet, we know that the leader was duly elected. Even after his highly troubling initial presidency and despite the alerts that came with the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – despite the leader directly declared plainly he planned to be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters chose him rather than his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to understand that we have only been several months into this administration. How will three more years of this decline position us? And what if that period transforms into an prolonged era, as there is not anyone to stop this leader from deciding that another term is required, possibly for national security reasons?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There will be midterm elections next year that could establish an alternate governmental control, in case Democrats recapture one or both houses of parliament. There are government representatives who are striving to exert certain responsibility, such as lawmakers currently launching an investigation regarding the effort to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a leadership election in the next cycle could start the path toward restoration just as the previous vote set us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, as they did last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is rising”, exactly as before following the Red Scare in that decade or during the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the listing ship eventually was righted.

The author states he recognizes the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding currently. As evidence, he cites the recent massive protests, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a personality's dismissal and the almost universal defiance by media to sign government requirements they report only approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists dormant till certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of the common good, certain violence so disruptive, that it is forced but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may be validated.

At the same time, the major inquiries endure: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its position in the world and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is accurate; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods possible.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to commit, more completely, to their duty of holding power to account. For some people, it might involve engaging with political races, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The reality is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
